Increasing Divorce Rate in America

The divorce rate in America seems to be increasing on a yearly basis.  The reasons for divorce range from intimacy and adultery reasons, to monetary and personal reasons. From a personal standpoint, on a day-to-day basis, it seems like more and more of my friends families end up in divorce.  The typical statistic that is heard, 50% of marriages end in divorce is quite a scary number, but is it true?  According to the Enrichment Journal on divorce rate in America, 41% of first marriages, 60% of second marriages, and 73% of third marriages end in divorce.  Considering the factors that lead into a divorce, it would make sense for the percent to increase as the marriages increase.  Many people have more than one reason for why they are getting divorced in the first place.  From the statistics, the number one reason that people got a divorce was due to a last of commitment, which is normally paired among other reasons.  Some of these other reasons are too much arguing, unrealistic expectations and abuse, (see bar chart).   Out of the couples that do get divorced, 1/3 couples later reconcile and end up back together.  The remaining couples stay single or get re-married and never reconcile (see pie chart). Some like to believe that religion and prayer is the best thing a couple can do for marriage.  According to the America Enrichment journal on divorce rate in America, 41% of first marriages, 60% of second marriages, and 73% of third marriages end in divorce.  It is clear that there is a direct relationship between the number of marriages and the number of divorces.  (see line chart)

Authors note: Marriage is a beautiful gift that should be shared between two people, and should be a life long commitment.  As society is continuing to change, divorce is becoming more and more acceptable and normal to children.  There are many wonderful marriage preparation outlets that couples should look to for advice before getting married.  I believe that there is nothing that a couple cannot work through.  When two people commit themselves to one another, they make a vow to be together forever.  This bond should not be broken.  Below is a link to some good resources for marriage preparation!
